LIRR Montauk Branch Track Maintenance Between Babylon and Sayville


March 18th, 2019 – The LIRR has announced that beginning on March 4, and continuing through May 19, 2019, track maintenance and grade crossing renewal work to improve safety and reliability will take place on the Montauk Branch, between Babylon and Sayville. Please see below for a breakdown of project scope and details.

Tie Replacement and Surfacing
  • Replacement of railroad ties and surfacing Babylon and Sayville, from March 4 to May 19 weekdays, between the hours of 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM.
  • Currently, residents may experience temporary construction noise throughout the evening for delivery of materials and mobilization.
  • One of two main tracks will be out of service midday, during this time, buses will replace trains between Babylon and Sayville.

Grade Crossing Renewal
  • The LIRR will install a new concrete grade crossing at Montauk Branch grade crossings in March.
  • Work at each crossing will take place on weekdays between 5:00 AM and 9:00 PM.
  • Each grade crossing will be closed to vehicular traffic for at least one day, but may take a second day to complete.
  • While the work is in progress, MTA Police will assist with crossing closure and traffic detours.
  • Temporary paving will be installed and each crossing will be permanently repaved at a later date.
