2018 Spring S.T.O.P. Day to be Held May 19th

The Town of Islip’s 2018 Spring S.T.O.P. Day (Stop Throwing Out Pollutants) will be held Saturday, May 19th, from 9:00 am. to 2:00pm. Residents will able to drive directly to the Town of Islip Multi-Purpose Recycling Facility in Holbrook, and dispose of waste materials in an environmentally-safe manner, with Department of Environmental Control staff on-hand to provide assistance if needed.

Last Week for Unlimited Yard Waste Collection

May 14th, 2018 Reminder: This is the last week of the Town’s Unlimited Yard Waste Collection. Starting the week of May 21st, Sanitation Crews will resume collecting yard waste along with your regularly scheduled garbage pick-up. As of May 21st, acceptable yard waste will include up to 6 bags, pails, or bundles under 50lbs, 4’x2’x2’, with your garbage on your regularly scheduled collection days only.

Please remember the Town of Islip does not collect grass clippings curbside. Grass clippings can be used in gardens and flower beds to avoid weeds and conserve water. You can also dispose of your grass clippings and other yard waste free of charge at the MacArthur Composting Facility. The facility is located at 1101 Railroad Avenue, Ronkonkoma, and is open Monday-Saturday from 7:00am-2:30pm.

Fire Island Inlet Bridge Closure May 9th

May 7th, 2018 – Please be advised: the Fire Island Inlet Bridge leading to Robert Mosses, will undergo a short term full closure on Wednesday, May 9th, between the hours of 3:00am to 5:30 am, to accommodate jacking work. Those planning to travel to or from Fire Island on Wednesday morning should take this into consideration and plan accordingly.

LIRR Double Track Project Track Outages and Scheduled Work

April 26th, 2018 –  The LIRR continues to make necessary infrastructure upgrades in an effort to improve service and reliability along the Main Line. During the weekends of April 28 – 30, May 5 – 7 and May 19 – 21, the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) will continue ongoing track work and other construction as part of the Double Track Project between Hicksville and Ronkonkoma. 

Additionally, the Long Island Rail Road will resurface the Carleton Avenue grade crossing in the Town of Islip, in preparation for the completion of the LIRR Double Project. Work is scheduled for Monday, April 30, 8:00 p.m. through Tuesday, May 1, 4:00 a.m.  See full details below.

Town Directed Auction to be held Saturday, April 28th

April 23rd, 2018 – The Department of Public Safety Enforcement would like to inform residents of a Town Directed Auction to be held Saturday, April 28th. Passenger cars, luxury cars, pickup trucks, vans, SUVs, boats, and boat trailers are among the over 150 surplus and abandoned vehicles and equipment available. The auction will be held by Maltz Auctions at the Town Facility located at 220 South Denver Avenue, Bay Shore, NY 11706. Inspection will be held the morning of the auction from 8:00 am – 10:00 am, with the auction to begin at 10:00 am. Parks, Recreation & Cultural Affairs Announce Elvis Music Tribute Day Trip

Islip Town Receiver of Taxes Issues Tax Reminder

April 9th, 2018 – Alexis Weik, Receiver of Taxes, reminds all Islip Taxpayers, that second half taxes are due May 31, 2018. THE LAST DAY FOR PAYMENT OF CURRENT TAXES AT THIS OFFICE will be THURSDAY, MAY 31, 2018, at which time the office will be open from 8:30 A.M. to 7:00 P.M.

The Tax Office, located at 40 Nassau Ave., Islip, is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. The office will be closed on Monday, May 28, 2018 in observance of Memorial Day.

“Learn to be… Tobacco Free” Free Smoking Cessation Workshop

April 4th, 20018 – The Suffolk County Health Department is partnering with the Town of Islip and community ambulance companies, to bring a free workshop that is open to the public, geared toward helping those who desire to quit smoking.

The workshop will cover:

  • Learn why it’s hard to quit
  • What chemicals the tobacco companies add to cigarettes
  • What resources are available to quit
  • What medications are most useful in helping smokers quit
