A Message from the Supervisor

“Welcome to Islip, the 3rd largest town in New York State, but with an endearing small town feel. We are so proud of our town…our beaches, golf courses, marinas, parks, housing opportunities for all, businesses, industrial parks, healthcare and educational institutions including our own Islip MacArthur Airport that provides many job opportunities. I sincerely hope you find this website helpful.” - Angie

July 31st, 2020 Due to heavy rainfall, the Suffolk County Department of Health Services has issued an advisory against bathing at 61 beaches. The advisory is based on the knowledge that bacteria at levels that exceed New York State standards will affect these beaches.

The beaches covered by the advisory are located in areas that are heavily influenced by stormwater runoff from the surrounding watersheds or adjacent tributaries, and because of their location in an enclosed embayment, experience limited tidal flushing.

The department recommends that bathing and other water contact be suspended in affected areas until the waters have been flushed by two successive tidal cycles (at least a 24-hour period) after the cessation of rainfall. This advisory will be lifted Saturday, August 1, 2020, at 10:00 a.m., unless sampling conducted by the department reveals elevated levels of bacteria persisting beyond the 24-hour period.

Additionally, Bayport Beach and Sayville Marine Park Beach, which closed yesterday due to the finding of bacteria at levels that exceed state standards, remain closed until further testing reveals that the bacteria have subsided to acceptable levels.

For the latest information on affected beaches, call the Bathing Beach HOTLINE at 852-5822, contact the Department's Office of Ecology at 852-5760 during normal business hours, or visit Suffolk County Department of Health Services beach monitoring webpage.
