Through its various divisions, the Department of Environmental Control manages the Town’s solid waste stream, environmental protection, bay management programs, garbage recycling and yard waste collections, as well as animal control programs. Environmental Sustainability
Supervisor Angie Carpenter has appointed a Sustainability Coordinator within the Department of Environmental Control to support the Town’s efforts to better protect the environment and reaffirm the Town’s commitment to sustainable practices
Bay Bottom Licensing Program
The Town of Islip established a Bay Bottom Licensing Program encompassing over 1500 acres of Town-owned bay bottom. The Program has proven successful as both a boost to the local economy, and to its participants who grow oysters, hard shell clams and sugar kelp. Once grown, the product is harvested and sold to local restaurants, and retail and wholesale establishments.

Permits
The Department of Environmental Control facilitates the issuance of permits for solid waste facilities and operations that handle, process, dispose, or otherwise manage refuse. The DEC has permit applications for:
- Solid Waste Services Permit Application
- Landscaper Registration Permit Application
- Donation Drop-Off Bin Registration Application
- Transfer Station Permit Application
The DEC also offers Small Business Credit Account Registration for tipping fees at our disposal facilities. Companies utilizing DEC Facilities are eligible to register.
Sanitation Inspectors
Inspectors from the Department of Environmental Control that proactively work to help residents with quality of life issues that may be present in their neighborhoods, such as garbage collection matters and littered properties. WRAP Program - We Recycle America Proudly
Our award-winning recycling program utilizes an alternating collection schedule. A WRAP Calendar is mailed to residents at the end of each year indicating the scheduled pickup days and detailing which items are acceptable for recycling.
If you've recently moved in or just need to replace a damaged or lost recycling pail, please fill out the WRAP Pail request form.
Compost and Wood Mulch
The Town’s generated compost and wood mulch is rich in nutrients and can benefit the beauty of your landscaping. Compost material is available free of charge to Town of Islip Residents and available for purchase by commercial customers. Compost is available year-round at the Town’s MacArthur Compost Facility.
Unlimited Yard Waste Collection
Unlimited Yard Waste Collection programs are held in the Spring, Fall and Winter. During the Unlimited Yard Waste collection program yard waste will not be collected with your regular garbage. A separate truck will collect it on your scheduled day. Refer to the Islip Information Dashboard for item regulations and schedules.
Grass Clippings are NOT collected curbside year round. Residents participate in our “Don’t Bag It” Program by either mulching or dropping off grass clippings at the MacArthur Compost Facility
Household Hazardous Material Disposal & Stop Throwing Out Pollutants (STOP) Day
Improper disposal of household hazardous waste can be harmful to our community. Residents can bring Household Hazardous Waste directly to our Multi-Purpose Recycling Facility. The Town offers one Saturday STOP Day drop-off each spring. Shredding Day
The Town of Islip offers two free shredding events for Islip residents on Saturdays in the spring and fall. Shred confidential documents, bank records, medical records, tax bills, and other personal information records.
Shredding Day will be held at the Multi-Purpose Recycling Facility. The event schedule can be found on the WRAP Recycling Calendar.
Electronic Waste
E-Waste (computers, monitors, printers, electronic games etc.) is collected every Wednesday. Additionally, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation requires manufacturers to provide free and convenient recycling of electronic waste. Residents may also drop off material at the Multi-Purpose Recycling Facility.
Waste Oil Disposal
The Town will accept waste oil not in excess of five (5) gallons at our Multi-Purpose Recycling Facility. Every gas station and oil retailer in Suffolk County is required by law to accept automotive waste oil in quantities not to exceed five (5) gallons.
Pharmaceuticals & Sharps Needles
The Town of Islip does not accept pharmaceuticals, controlled substances or “Sharps” materials, such as syringes and needles etc. at any of our facilities. Do not throw out or flush your unused or unwanted pharmaceuticals and/or sharps. Improper disposal of these items can be harmful to our local drinking water and aquatic life.
Many local pharmacies, hospitals and nursing homes may accept unwanted medication. To search your area for local pharmaceutical drop off locations, visit Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Controlled Substance Public Disposal Location Search or contact your local Suffolk County Police Department Precinct for possible available medical waste drop off bins. For additional medical waste disposal options, visit the NYS DEC Safe Medication Disposal for Households.
To view a list of Sharps disposal locations please visit NYS Safe Sharps Collection Program. Additionally, all hospitals and nursing homes in New York State are mandated by law to accept home-generated sharps as a free community service through their sharps collection programs.
Adopt-a-Bike/ Recycle a Bicycle
The Town of Islip Adopt-a-Bike Program gives residents an opportunity to donate or adopt gently-used bicycles at our Multi-Purpose Recycling Facility. Bike adoption is free to all Islip residents.
