Suffolk County to Host Septic Improvement Program Information Session

December 28th, 2018 – Please be advised: Suffolk County is hosting an information session about the County’s Septic Improvement Program on Friday, January 4th, from 10 am. to 12 pm. at the Department of Health Services in Yaphank.

Nitrogen pollution from cesspools and septic systems has been identified as the largest single cause of degraded water quality contributing to beach closures, restrictions on shell fishing, toxic algae blooms and massive fish kills. For homeowners close to surface waters in Suffolk County, nitrogen can rapidly reach surface waters where it contributes to degradation of our marshes, bays, and beaches. Even inland, nitrogen from septic systems will eventually reach the groundwater and surface waters.

Supervisor Urges Christmas Tree Fire Safety Precautions

November 30th, 2018 – The Holidays are here, and Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter is reminding all residents to be mindful of Christmas Tree Fire safety. Most people are surprised to learn, that a dry tree can catch fire and burn faster than newspaper. Please see the video above for a disturbing reminder of just how quickly an unwatered Christmas tree can engulf an entire room. Supervisor Carpenter urges residents to always keep trees adequately watered, away from heat sources and never leave lights on overnight. “The holidays are a very special time of year, a time to create lasting memories with loved ones. Please take a moment to watch this important video, and take the necessary precautions to ensure that holiday memories are happy memories,” said Supervisor Carpenter.
