The Division of Planning administers the permit processing which requires approval from the Planning Board, Zoning Board of Appeals, and/or Town Board. Long term, this Division maintains the Town Comprehensive Plan, periodically updating demographics and development trends. Planning studies, such as the current Local Waterfront Revitalization Study, provide information to the Town Board that allows this Division to update or amend the Comprehensive Plan. This Division also manages and updates the Town Geographic Information System (GIS), used by departments throughout the Town.


View the Temporary Outdoor Dining Permit & Tent Permit Application

The State of New York has not permitted the reopening of bars and/or restaurants at this time. The Town is accepting temporary outdoor dining and canopy/tent applications without fees in order to facilitate business openings once this occurs.

In preparation of NYS allowing bars and/or restaurants to reopen, the Town of Islip has established a pdf Temporary Outdoor Dining Permit Application and a pdf Canopy / Tent Permit Application Temporary Outdoor Dining with no fees. The online fillable application(s) are located on the Town of Islip website. Applicants will need to include a dimensioned sketch of the proposed temporary outdoor table/seating plan with their application (if submitting an application electronically, please scan a copy of the dimensioned sketch and email it with your application).

Applications can be submitted to the Town of Islip Planning Department via email at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. Alternatively, applications can be mailed or dropped off at Town Hall (please see the Temporary Application Process Requirements During COVID-19).

The department staff shall contact applicants if further information is required to approve an application. Applicants will be notified via email once the Planning Department has approved a permit request. The permit approval will be forwarded to the Town Fire Prevention Office to schedule an onsite inspection of the installed outdoor table/seating and canopy/tents (if applicable) prior to operating.
