The Islip Resource Recovery Agency is a public benefit corporation created to assist in the planning and the development of waste management facilities in the Town. The core values of the Agency are to benefit the people of the Town of Islip by providing proper and cost-effective disposal methods of solid waste to safely process components of the waste stream.
The Agency owns four operational disposal facilities: The MacArthur Waste to Energy Facility, the MacArthur Composting Facility
, the Hauppauge Cleanfill/Landfill
, and the
Multi-purpose Recycling Facility.
The Waste to Energy facility utilizes a burning process to reduce the volume of solid waste by approximately 85%. The facility processes residential and commercial solid waste and generates enough electrical power to not only operate the facility, it also sells energy to the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) as well. Thus, providing a financial and environmental benefit to the Islip community.
The Islip Resource Recovery Agency also owns a sanitation Collection Unit that provides garbage, recyclables and yard waste collection to approximately 8,600 homes within certain areas of the Town. For information or assistance with the Collection Unit, please contact (631) 595-3630.
