January 24, 2020 – USA Today 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards winners were announced today, naming Long Island MacArthur Airport #6 in the Best Small Airport category.
“We are so grateful for the support we receive from this community, and for our loyal customers who recognize our convenience,” said Commissioner of Aviation Shelley LaRose-Arken. “It was an honor to be nationally recognized by an independent panel of travel experts, who nominated MacArthur Airport among 19 others last December. Today, after four weeks of voting, we celebrate that readers, travel experts, customers, and the community choose Long Island MacArthur Airport as a Top 10 Small Airport,” she added. The small airport category includes airports that serve fewer than 10 million passengers each year.
The winning facilities were described as being “smaller, friendlier airports” that “excel with their commercial flight offerings, easy access, and amenities,” according to the contest website. The 10Best voting page highlights MacArthur Airport as an alternative for airline passengers “wishing to avoid the big, crowded New York area airports (JFK and LaGuardia).”
“This vote of confidence for MacArthur Airport means so much to us. We appreciate the support from Long Islanders, and from our community partners who used their social media platforms to get out the vote for MacArthur Airport because they know how important it is for Long Island, said Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “We work hard each day to offer customer excellence, new options and amenities at the airport. We take the headache and stress out of air travel,” she added.
The Top Ten winners in the Best Small Airport category are as follows:
- Huntsville International Airport
- T.F. Green Airport
- Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport
- Piedmont Triad International Airport
- Bangor International Airport
- Long Island MacArthur Airport
- Indianapolis International Airport
- Paine Field
- Manchester-Boston Regional Airport
- Long Beach Airport
Of the 20 airports nominated, 12 are larger than MacArthur Airport in terms of passengers, and 10 have more social media followers. A sixth place finish among such competition indicates the natural pride of Long Islanders, engagement and support from community partners, and a daily, consistent focus on communicating the airport’s benefits on social media. “It was a team effort to help MacArthur Airport succeed against such strong competition,” said Carpenter.
“We believe this top ranking further demonstrates our ability to conveniently serve New York travelers. We thank this community, our airlines, and our dedicated airport staff for their ongoing commitment to customer excellence,” LaRose-Arken said.
