Islip, NY – The Town of Islip Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs held its annual Sharpshooter Basketball competition recently, a tradition that brings together children in 4th and 5th grade from across Islip Town for some friendly competition and to help promote drug and alcohol awareness. Students competed to see who could make the most hoops and the competition started after hearing about the history of the contest and a few words of encouragement.
Several Town officials were in attendance including Councilman Jorge Guadron, Councilman John Lorenzo, Councilwoman DawnMarie Kuhn and officials from the South Shore University Hospital including Irene Macyk, and Deputy Commissioner, of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs, Deirdre Wahlberg.
The highlight of the event was when 5th grader Tyler Deutsch from Sherwood Elementary set a record with 51 points! He broke the previous record of 45 set by Kyle Messsina (2018) & Kailum Broomfield (2024) and was just 2 points shy of the all-time high score of 53 points set by 4th grader Carter Carey in 2024.
The Town welcomes all photos taken by spectators from the event. Please message your photos to the Islip Facebook page and we'll add them to our account! Congratulations to all!
