FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is the Weekly Paper Collection (WPC) Pilot Program?
The WPC Recycling Pilot Program is a temporary initiative designed to increase cardboard & paper recycling participation in your neighborhood (view map). The program provides residents with improved recycling options and education on what paper materials can and cannot be recycled.
The Town of Islip currently earns revenue for every ton of cardboard and paper collected which helps to offset regular garbage disposal costs. Weekly collections are designed to make recycling more convenient for residents and can increase participation and compliance—leading to more revenue and better environmental outcomes.
How do I prepare my paper for recycling?
Flatten cardboard boxes, and place into a larger cardboard box or bundle with string. Recyclables can also be placed directly in to a WRAP Recycling Pail.
Click Here to Request a WRAP Pail.
Can I place out wet and/or slightly dirty cardboard or paper?
Yes!
Can cardboard & paper be mixed with metal, glass & plastic in the pail?
No. Please continue to separate the two types of recyclables for the Town to properly process the material without additional sorting costs.
Can I place recyclables in plastic bags?
Please do not use plastic bags. Plastic bags cause significant problems at recycling facilities and should not be used.
When is pickup scheduled?
Cardboard & Paper will be collected every Wednesday. On the alternating weeks that metal, glass & plastic is also collected, a second truck will come to collect separated cardboard and paper.

What are the goals of the pilot program?
The goals are to:
- Increase community awareness and participation in paper recycling
- Reduce contamination in recycling bins
- Collect data to support the development of a permanent, town-wide weekly paper recycling program
How will success be measured?
The Town will conduct studies of the following:
- Volume of cardboard and paper collected
- Participation rates
- Contamination rates
- Community feedback
What happens to the paper after it's collected?
Recycled paper is processed locally and used to produce new paper products such as newspapers and cardboard, helping to reduce waste and conserve natural resources.
How long will the Pilot Program last?
There is no current end date. The Town will monitor the program's success and determine future steps based on participation, contamination rates, and overall impact.
