On November 29th, 1683, William Nicoll became the first patentee of Islip when he purchased land from Sachem (Chief) Winnequaheagh of Connetquot. He named his 50,000-acre plantation Islip Grange, in honor of the town from which he emigrated: Islip, England. The original settlement encompassed Bayport, Bohemia, Brentwood, Central Islip, East Islip, Great River, Hauppauge, Holbrook, Holtsville, Islip Terrace, Oakdale, Sayville, West Sayville, and part of Ronkonkoma.
Today, 335 years later, Islip has grown into the 3rd largest town in the State of New York, providing more than 330,000 residents with a beautiful place to live, work and play. As our Town approaches maturity, Islip remains a varied, beautiful town where industry and community thrive. It features: ocean beaches, sparkling bays, a beautiful lake, vistas of forest fields, canals and ponds, historic villages, innumerable architectural treasures and its very own airport.
The Town of Islip has a long and rich heritage, from its roots as a a seaside community, to its history as Long Island’s original Gold Coast. Join us for the remainder of 2018 and throughout 2019, as Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter and the Islip Town Board celebrate this rich heritage, and commemorate 335 years of history, growth and development.
