January 28th, 2020 – Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter’s Office, the Town of Islip Department of Public Safety and Office of Emergency Management continue to monitor developing information relating to the 2019 Novel Coronavirus aka 2019-nCoV.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is monitoring the outbreak of a respiratory illness caused by a novel (new) coronavirus first identified in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China. “Our commissioners are closely monitoring the situation, and are keeping us apprised of new information as it becomes available,” said Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter.
The CDC is working closely with the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Investigations into this novel coronavirus on an ongoing basis, and is monitoring and responding to this evolving situation.
While 5 cases of travelers from Wuhan have been confirmed in the United States in four states (AZ, CA, IL, WA) as of January 26, 2020, and the CDC considers this is a very serious public health threat, based on current information, the immediate health risk from 2019-nCoV to the general American public is considered low at this time.
Since January 17, 2020, travelers from Wuhan to the United States undergo entry screening for symptoms associated with 2019-nCoV at three U.S. airports that receive most of the travelers from Wuhan, China: San Francisco (SFO), New York (JFK), and Los Angeles (LAX) airports.
The CDC believes at this time that symptoms of 2019-nCoV may appear in as few as 2 days or as long as 14 days after exposure.
The latest situation summary updates are available on the CDC’s web page 2019 Novel Coronavirus, Wuhan, China.
