April 20th, 2021 – Central Islip HS Senior Twyla Joseph received a Certificate of Recognition from Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter, on behalf of the members of the Town Board recently. Twyla, whose story of the struggles of virtual learning, anxiety and college selection during COVID-19, reflects the story of millions of young students struggling during the pandemic, graced the cover of Time magazine in an April story, "The Lost Year."

Inside, the story chronicles how the 17-year-old often felt alone in making decisions on what college to attend and what career to pursue. Time magazine was introduced to Twyla through her volunteer work with the group, Make the Road Action, which advocates for justice in education, immigration and the criminal justice system."Twyla has become an inspiration for so many. It's been a tough year for everyone, and certainly for students of all ages," said Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter. "I am so delighted Twyla was able to be here with us and share this exciting news."
"The story that I share is the story of many people, especially students in my community, who also had to go through this during the pandemic," said Twyla.
Twyla made applications to several colleges and is awaiting their decisions.
