October 22nd, 2021 – Town of Islip officials were joined by representatives from NY State and Suffolk County at the grand opening of the new Town of Islip Animal Shelter and Adopt-A-Pet Center. The state-of-the-art ADA compliant facility is centrally located on Carleton Ave in Central Islip, and consists of 17,727sf of space, a larger lobby area, additional viewing rooms, a cattery, ample parking, energy efficient lighting, dedicated outdoor play areas for dogs, 82 kennels and a separate area for aggressive dogs. The new shelter also includes a 1,000sf surgical suite, exam room and a veterinarian’s office.

The new shelter replaces the Town’s previous shelter which was built in 1964. “We are proud of this new environmentally conscious facility which provides more space for the animals as well as for the staff,” said Supervisor Angie Carpenter.On hand for the event were Islip Supervisor, Angie Carpenter; NYS Senator Phil Boyle; NYS Assemblyman Phil Ramos; Islip Town Board member John Cochrane; Councilwoman, Mary Kate Mullen; Councilman James O'Connor; Town Clerk, Olga Murray; DEC Commissioner, Martin Bellew; Deputy Commissioner Greg Hancock; Shelter Supervisor Teri Giacalone, shelter staff, volunteers, among others.
