May 25th, 2022 – Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter recently celebrated the 95th birthday of longtime West Islip resident, Norma Downey. To commemorate her milestone birthday, the Symphonic Pops of Long Island performed a special concert at the West Islip Public Library. For many years, Norma volunteered with the Islip Arts Council, and had been an avid supporter of the Metropolitan Opera and American Ballet Theater. An enthusiast of the performing arts, she spent hours attending concerts held by the Islip Arts Council, the Senior Pops of Long Island, Massapequa Philharmonic and shows On and Off Broadway.
“Throughout her life, Norma has had a deep appreciation of the arts, and has shown kindness, generosity and love toward others,” said Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “On behalf of the Town Board, we wish Norma a very happy birthday, good health and happiness,” said the Supervisor.
Norma is the mother of former U.S. Congressman Thomas Downey and Jeffrey Downey; grandmother of Lauren, Teddy, Jack, Zachary and Sarah; and the great-grandmother to Philip, George, Leo, Emma and Chloe.
