April 7th, 2023 – Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter welcomed the Veterans of the Westhampton/Hampton Bays VFW on their tour of Islip’s own Long Island MacArthur Airport. Alongside representatives from the TSA, the group visited law enforcement, fire rescue and maintenance facilities, as well as Southwest Airlines, prior to stopping for photos next to the General Douglas MacArthur Memorial located in the main concourse.
Long Island MacArthur Airport (ISP) shares a historic connection with our Nation’s armed forces dating back to 1942, when the Town contracted with the Federal Government to build an airfield on Town-owned land for military use—just four months after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Originally “Islip Airport,” the name would later be changed to MacArthur Airport, in honor of WWII General Douglas MacArthur.
“Our Town and all of Long Island has a long history serving as an asset to military operations, but chiefest among those are the brave servicemen and women to whom all the Nation owes a debt of gratitude,” said Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “It is my honor to welcome the Westhampton/Hampton Bays VFW to our airport.”
