June 13th, 2023 – Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter and the Islip Town Board recognized five scholar athletes from Central Islip High School recently, at the Islip June Town Board meeting.
Among the students were Central Islip High School’s 2023 Valedictorian, Kelly Gaussaint, who recently received the $40,000 Future Engineers Scholarship from Amazon. This fall, Ms. Gaussaint will be attending Duke University with a focus in Medical Technology and an interest in exploring innovative solutions for environmental preservation.
Students Stephanie Weiner, Leighanna Tolan, Tristen Laing, and Ryan Antwi were also recognized during the ceremony for their excellence, both in the classroom and on the field of play.
The group, under director Theresa O'Connor, competed against hundreds of talented choirs from across the nation, winning the title of Best Treble Choir in the prestigious Festival Disney competition. The Sweet Adelines also took home the "Gold Mickey" for Overall Best Choir, with a near perfect score of 99.
At the meeting, the Sweet Adelines wowed the audience with a near flawless rendition of "Mr. Sandman."
"These Sweet Adelines are ‘so good...so good...’ indeed," said Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter. "I think Neil Diamond would be proud, but certainly not as proud as all of us here Town of Islip. Congratulations to these very talented young ladies," the Supervisor added.
