– Students from school districts throughout the Town of Islip recently participated in the Town’s Unity Council Ambassador Program by creating their own Unity Project Action Plan. The Town rebranded its Anti-bias task force to the Town of Islip Unity Council after the COVID-19 Pandemic with the same goals in mind, to celebrate Islip’s culture while educating one another about inclusion, diversity, and equity.“The Ambassador program brings together students from districts throughout our Town to participate in a series of forums aimed at promoting these ideals. In today’s world, it is so important to enforce these principals in our youth,” said Islip Town Supervisor, Angie Carpenter.
In this special program, students have the opportunity to learn about topics including diversity and equity, how to challenge bias, how to be an upstander to bullying, as well as hear from a range of special guest speakers who share their personal stories of overcoming prejudice, and how these speakers now use their voices to promote a more inclusive environment.
Student participants in the Unity Ambassador program have the unique opportunity to create a Unity Project Action Plan for their school and community. At the culmination of four sessions, the students presented their Unity Project Action Plan at the West Islip Community Center.
