A Message from the Supervisor

“Welcome to Islip, the 3rd largest town in New York State, but with an endearing small town feel. We are so proud of our town…our beaches, golf courses, marinas, parks, housing opportunities for all, businesses, industrial parks, healthcare and educational institutions including our own Islip MacArthur Airport that provides many job opportunities. I sincerely hope you find this website helpful.” Angie

October 25th, 2024 – This month, Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter and members of the Town Board had the honor of recognizing West Sayville resident, Commander George J. Munkenbeck, United States Coast Guard Reserve (Ret.), for his recent recognition as the 145th Registered Public Historian in New York… and for receiving the prestigious Edward J. Winslow Local Government Historian Award for Excellence.

George’s dedication to the history of Islip and Long Island is evident in his extensive research and public presentations, which continue to enrich the community's understanding of their local heritage.

With a background that includes a BS in Engineering from the United States Coast Guard Academy, and an MA in Emergency and Disaster Management, George has served as Town Historian since 2015 and is an active contributor to numerous historical societies and civic organizations.

“Today, we proudly recognize our Town Historian George J. Munkenbeck, not only for his accomplishments in public history but for his unwavering commitment to preserving and sharing the rich history of our Town and community,” said Supervisor Angie Carpenter.
