March 2nd, 2020 – The Town of Islip recently launched a new internship program with Eastern Suffolk BOCES in Oakdale to promote student education in real work environments.
Three BOCES students were selected by the school to participate in this pilot program, and intern at the DPW mechanics workshop in Central Islip. At the facility, students are able to take the lessons learned in the classroom and apply them in a real work environment. Each intern is paired with an experienced DPW mechanic to learn step-by-step, the process of automotive repair. The Town also lends cars needing repair to the BOCES classroom to be used as the technical portion of their daily lessons.
“This program is beneficial to both the school and our Town. Students with a passion for automotive repair are able to channel their learned skills in a functioning automotive repair shop. Many of our mechanics also started as BOCES students, so the possibilities through this program are endless,” said Supervisor Carpenter.
“The possibilities of these internships are endless, these students are able to see the practical side of their technical training and see if these career paths are right for them, we are continually discussing other possibilities to benefit the BOCES students in different capacities at the Town,” said Personnel Director Arthur Abbate.
