April 30th, 2020 – Islip High School teachers, boardmembers and administrators rode in a cavalcade of 70 cars throughout the hamlet of Islip Tuesday, to reconnect with their colleagues and students. The parade of 70 staff members drove for three hours through neighborhood streets, escorted by an Islip fire truck.
"We miss our kids, we miss our community, and we wanted them to know that we are here for them," said Mrs. Melissa Horn, Islip HS guidance counselor and senior class advisor. "The staff needed that day more than we thought we did. It was great to be with colleagues, alumni were home from college, there were students outside as well. It was so nice. Islip is truly a special community," she said.
Event coordinator and Islip High School English teacher Megan Stern, organized the parade in a matter of days, according to Mrs. Horn.
Mrs. Kristine Pitera, Islip High School special educator and senior class advisor, joined with Mrs. Horn and students, including class valedictorian Darianne Rogers, Duke University 2024 and salutatorian Maddie Germano, UNC Chapel Hill, 2024 in the parking lot of Brookwood Hall after the parade, practicing social distancing under bright sunny skies.
