July 22nd, 2020 – Suffolk County began a comprehensive shellfish restoration program several years ago, covering thousands of acres in Peconic and Gardiner's Bays, in an effort to restore shellfish populations and improve water quality. Islip Town initiated a similar aquaculture program In 2011.

As part of the program, the Town of Islip leases bay bottom acres to local entrepreneurs to develop shellfish farming operations.
