September 17th, 2020 – The Town of Islip Public Safety Division graduated 12 Peace Officers from its in-house training academy this week, the third Islip Town-run peace academy training program of its kind.
The New York State approved program is taught by Town of Islip certified instructors. Candidates spend 130 hours of part academic, part physical training, consisting of classroom instruction in criminal procedural and penal law; ethics; communication; daily defensive tactics; physical training; Narcan training; CPR and First Aid.
"Conducting our own in-house academy is not only a cost-saving measure, but it gives our instructors the opportunity to design a program tailored to the Town's needs," said Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter.
“We try to make sure that everybody’s well equipped to go out into the street and do their jobs,” said Islip Public Safety Commissioner, and one of the academy’s instructors, Tony D’Amico. “We do a lot of physical and defensive tactics regarding how to approach a vehicle that might be occupied. That’s one of the places where many people in uniform get injured,” he added.
“I just want you to know how much we appreciate what you do each and every day. On behalf of myself as the Town Supervisor and every single member of the town board, please know that we appreciate your efforts,” said Supervisor Carpenter. “We carry in our hearts, the wish that you always stay safe. It is not an easy time to be in law enforcement. We respect you and we will always have your back,” she added.
